Having been born and raised in suburban Detroit, I am a lifelong Detroit Tigers fan. (I now live on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, but the loyalty has not changed.) My late wife, Mary Ann, married into this obsession. At least once a year, my parents and siblings, with spouses and children, would trek to Tiger Stadium for a game. Mary Ann always commented about how my father wanted to make sure everyone could see the full field from their seats.

After my parents passed the tradition stopped, but I continued to go to Tiger Stadium and then Comerica Park for games. The attached photo was taken at Comerica Park in 2014, after Mary Ann was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease but before her diagnosis with ALS, making her a relatively rare sufferer of both diseases. I lost Mary Ann to ALS on January 1, 2019.
