I am Madeline Kennedy

living with ALS

Florida

Now I cannot walk, nor feed or dress myself. There is little I can do, but I’m still me inside this dwindling body.

I AM ALS. I had a normal, active life before I was blindsided by ALS at the age of 59. I’m the mother of four successful children. I’ve had a happy marriage for 37 years. I was a nurse for 38 years, and taught for the last ten. I was a golfer, a tennis player and a scuba diver. Who would have thought this was lurking around the corner to attack me. When faced with a disease for which nothing can be done, I threw myself into advocacy. I gave my first speech just three months after my diagnosis. I participated and initiated fundraisers that raised over $400,000 for ALS research. You can see most of my speeches at https://www.youtube.com/madken1234. I’ve had ALS for nine years, well beyond my expected lifespan. Now I cannot walk, nor feed or dress myself. There is little I can do, but I’m still me inside this dwindling body. I’ve participated in committees with the FDA, NEALS, the National ALS Registry and others to fight ALS. My battle is not over. I have so much to share with you about my journey.
