I am Laura Hanson

a family member of someone we've lost to ALS,
an ALS gene carrier,
living with ALS

California

On my way home from his memorial I started to notice foot drop.

In June 2019 my dad died from ALS. He told us, his children, that it was not genetic and we don’t need to worry.

On my way home from his memorial I started to notice foot drop. Two and a half years later, after lots of tests and guesses as to why my legs were getting weak, I got a genetic test and found I have the C9orf72 gene.

I had to move from denial to acceptance. Video is the joy I felt when I could get my leg over the lip of the tent. At that time I thought I was safe from ALS because it was an improvement.
