In memory of John C. Daly

someone we've lost to ALS

New York

During my dad's agency career he received multiple community service awards for his volunteer work in establishing several youth sports programs.

My dad was an insurance agent with Nationwide insurance for over 45 years and was diagnosed with ALS in May of 1989. He became bedridden & on a ventilator by August of that year. Because he held a former political office his medical plan allowed for around the clock nursing. Therefore we brought him home at Christmas time that year and he remained there until he passed away August of 1990.

During my dad’s agency career he received multiple community service awards for his volunteer work in establishing several youth sports programs. That apparently rubbed off on me, as I too received multiple service awards from Nationwide due to the money I helped raise for our area ALS Center, St Peters ALS Regional Center.

I am the founder and co-chair of the ALS Memorial Open which just celebrated our 30th anniversary golf tournament, which over that time has raised $2.3 million for the Center. I have also spent over 5 years attending ALSA’s Advocacy Conference in DC, as well as become an ALS Research Ambassador. After retiring from Nationwide I was employed as an advocate/consultant for St Peters ALS Regional Center. I guess I am an example of “the acorn doesn’t fall far from the tree.”
