I am Carolyn Mahnke

a family member of someone we've lost to ALS

Illinois

She was a model of grace and courage.

My mother was diagnosed with ALS at age 61. She never, ever complained. She felt blessed by family, the medical community, church members, social workers, friends and everyone who was horrified at this disease and did all we could to help her.

She was a model of grace and courage. The way she handled herself in her final years still guides me today but I’m haunted at what she had to endure. She was 63 when she died.
