In memory of Becky Ward

someone we've lost to ALS

Ohio

She was surrounded by her friends and family and a wonderful medical staff at her home when she passed in August 2023.

It was in the Fall of 2018 my sister Becky was Dx with ALS. She was 58 years old and the same year we lost our father to Alzheimer’s. It was absolutely the most devastating Dx we could have heard. Becky’s first symptom was having trouble with her tongue burning and she didn’t say much about her problem. But as time went on she experienced slurred speech. Her doctor appointments and Dx was seizures. Meds were given and no improvement. A trip to the Mayo clinic produced a Dx of ALS.

Yes she was in Minnesota texting and crying for the worst possible diagnosis. It was a total nightmare for everyone. She was a trooper throughout her ordeal and of course many tears were shed by both Becky and her family.

Becky was able to drive and walk for around 2 and 1/2 years after her Dx.

She couldn’t eat any solid food but was able to get some fluids down.

Eventually she had a peg tube placement. And a bipap for assistance to breathe. This disease is one of the cruelest. She endured so much I couldn’t describe.

Becky held on for 5 years and throughout her illness her cats, Poo and Blue, and her dog Mason slept by her side continuously, never leaving her alone.

The last year of Becky’s life was hard for her. She worried about her beloved pets and what would happen to them. I have her dog Mason and her son has her cats.

She was surrounded by her friends and family and a wonderful medical staff at her home when she passed in August 2023. There isn’t a day that goes by Becky is never forgotten. Becky always maintained Hope and so did her family. I believe the future holds promises for ALS.

ALS community is family. It’s important everyone’s story is told.

We love you Becky and you will always be in our memories and heart.
