#ALSinDC – 2023 Flag Event

Where:
The flag installation will be placed on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Below is a map of the entire mall, with the Washington Monument on the western end and the Capitol Building on the eastern end, with our event space circled in orange. All events will be located here unless specified otherwise.
The flag installation will be located between the Washington Monument and 14th St SW (address for reference: 2 15th St NW, Washington, DC 20024), in the trapezoid-shaped grassy area circled in the map below and filled with little flag icons:
When:
This event will take place from May 10 – May 13, 2023.
The itinerary for these days is subject to change, but here is what we have as of April 14:
**Note: I AM ALS staff members will be present at the flag installation each of these days from 9am – 5pm, so you can arrive whenever you want!
Wednesday, May 10
- 12pm: Flag installation begins
- 7pm: Screening of No Ordinary Campaign at Miracle Theatre (535 8th St. SE, Washington DC 20003). A public parking lot is on 8th St. SE between I St. and Virginia Ave. Reserve your free tickets here!
Thursday, May 11
- 10:30am – 12pm: Speaker series – Anyone attending the event can come to the microphone and speak with fellow advocates. This will be recorded and live streamed. Link coming soon.
- 12pm – 4 pm: Small groups can break off to go to the Capitol for legislator meetings
- 12pm – 5pm: Small groups can break off and raise awareness by distributing information through conversation or flyers.
- 12pm – 5pm: Volunteers will take photos of each flag for those who can’t make it to DC
- 12pm – 5pm: Volunteers will create flags and install them for anyone who did not submit a flag before the event
Friday, May 12
- 9am – 5pm: Small groups can break off to walk to the Capitol for legislator meetings
- 9am – 5pm: Volunteers will take photos of each flag for those who can’t make it to DC
- 9am – 5pm: Small groups can break off and raise awareness by distributing information through conversation or flyers.
- 9am – 5pm: Volunteers will create flags and install them for anyone who did not submit a flag before the event
Saturday, May 13
- 9am – 3pm: Volunteers will take photos of each flag for those who can’t make it to DC
- 9am – 3pm: Small groups can break off and raise awareness by distributing information through conversation or flyers
- 3pm: Flag installation breakdown begins

- Event RSVP Form – Use this form to indicate whether you will be in DC in person for any part of the event. (You can also use this form to volunteer to help I AM ALS with flag setup, breakdown, taking photos, etc.)
- No Ordinary Campaign screening ticket form – Use this form to get a ticket to Wednesday night’s screening of No Ordinary Campaign! Admission is free but tickets are limited, so please reserve a ticket if you plan to attend the screening.

Note: WMATA has an accessibility van program called MetroAccess ParaTransit that allows for travel in wheelchair-accessible vans instead of bus or rail for those who are eligible. You will need to book your trip in advance, but check the link above for more details!
