I am Sara English

a family member of someone we've lost to ALS

North Carolina

As a family, we knew we had precious time left.

My dad was a US Army Veteran who served in the DMZ during the Vietnam War. In April of 2017, we learned that he has ALS. Upon receiving this diagnosis, the VA recognized it as a service -related disability. As a family, we knew we had precious time left. Over the years between his diagnosis and COVID, we made as much of the time we knew we had while he was relatively healthy by taking vacations together and traveling to spend time with each other. My dad and mom courageously and graciously battled this cruel and terrible disease every day for six and a half years. We lost my dad on January 6, 2024 and, although the grief is terrible, we all have peace because he no longer suffers.
