I am Mary Tiknis

living with ALS

New Jersey

I have been the caretaker of my children, grandchildren and husband--now I need them to take care of me.

I have been a nurse for 48 years. I have been the caretaker of my children, grandchildren and husband–now I need them to take care of me. I was diagnosed with ALS one year ago. I can no longer watch my grandchildren without someone being there to watch them. I cannot swim with them anymore or play ball with them anymore.

This disease has impacted my whole family. I am grateful for the ALS clinic; they are very proactive to help us stay independent as long as we can.

I walk with a Rollator and braces on my legs but I can’t go far. If I am going far, I need to use the wheelchair. I need help getting dressed. It is a devastating disease. We need all the help we can get.
Thank you,
Mary Ann Tiknis
