I remember her in her blue bell bottom jeans when she would bend her back, look up, her blond hair would flow back, clap her hands, and laugh with such a strong sound that conveyed so much life, so much love, and so much passion for life.

Many people know my mom as Nona – the Italian grandma to her Boo Boo Bear and Carly girl. Before Nona, she has been known as an incredible Italian cook who can whip up a 7 course meal for up to 400 people rather simply. While being an incredible Italian cook and an amazing Nona might be some of her favorite identities, there have been others. The business lady who worked as an accountant, a tour guide, a deli manager, a hardware store owner, and EMT… to name just a few… and – all at the same time- while never missing a school function for her kids.

Before she was Nona, before she was an incredible cook, before she juggled jobs and family, before all of this… she was my mom. I am the first person to know exactly what her heart sounded like from the inside. I remember when it was just her and I, and she used to sing the Helen Reddy song to me, “You and Me Against the World.” I remember when I was little, I could hear her laughter out in the Camp Sherman store when I was upstairs in my room. I remember her in her blue bell bottom jeans when she would bend her back, look up, her blond hair would flow back, clap her hands, and laugh with such a strong sound that conveyed so much life, so much love, and so much passion for life…
